Idaho is home to some of the most breathtaking mountain lakes, and the Pioneer Mountains offer incredible fishing opportunities for anglers looking for pristine waters and great catches. On a recent trip, I had the chance to fish at three stunning lakes—Iron Bog Lake, Fish Pole Lake, and Brockie Lake—each with its own unique charm and fishing experiences. If you’re looking to explore the high country in search of trout and solitude, these lakes should be on your list.
Tucked deep in the Pioneer Mountains, Iron Bog Lake offers an unforgettable fishing experience. The hike to the lake is moderately challenging, but the rewards are well worth the effort. The crystal-clear waters are teeming with rainbow trout and brook trout, making it an excellent spot for anglers of all skill levels.
Brook trout are particularly abundant here, and while they may not always be trophy-sized, they put up a fun fight and are eager to take both flies and spinners. Rainbow trout can be found in good numbers as well, especially near the inlets and deeper sections of the lake. Whether you’re fly fishing or using conventional tackle, this lake provides plenty of action.
If you’re looking for a chance at landing a true trophy trout, Fish Pole Lake is the place to go. This high-altitude lake is managed under trophy fishing regulations, with a strict two-trout limit, and only fish over 20 inches may be kept. These regulations help maintain an excellent fishery, ensuring that anglers have the chance to catch large, high-quality fish.
The primary species in Fish Pole Lake is cutthroat trout, known for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. These fish thrive in the cold, deep waters of the lake, growing to impressive sizes thanks to the limited harvest rules. Anglers who practice catch-and-release will find plenty of opportunities to hook into some real giants. Whether you prefer using large streamers, spoons, or even live bait (where allowed), this lake offers some of the best chances at a trophy trout in the Pioneer Mountains.
Brockie Lake is another gem hidden in the Pioneer Mountains, offering a remote and peaceful fishing experience. This lake is home to brook trout and rainbow trout, similar to Iron Bog Lake, but with less fishing pressure due to its more secluded location. The fish here tend to be extremely healthy, and while they may not reach the trophy status of Fish Pole Lake, they provide plenty of excitement for anglers willing to make the journey.
Brook trout are the dominant species in Brockie Lake, and they respond well to small spinners, flies, and even bait like worms or PowerBait. Fly fishermen will find success with dry flies in the early morning and evening, while nymphs and streamers work well throughout the day. The calm waters and scenic mountain backdrop make this lake an angler’s paradise.
Fishing in the Pioneer Mountains of Idaho is an experience every angler should have. Whether you’re looking to catch numbers of eager brook trout at Iron Bog Lake, chase trophy cutthroat trout at Fish Pole Lake, or enjoy the solitude and steady action at Brockie Lake, these waters offer something for everyone. If you plan a trip, be sure to check local regulations, practice ethical fishing, and enjoy the beauty of Idaho’s backcountry.
